COCKTAIL CONCOCTION: SMOKING BISHOP

This is a batched recipe that yields about six 8oz servings.

Preparation:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Wash and dry Oranges. Pierce and stud each Orange with 5-10 cloves.

Place Oranges in a baking dish and roast until lightly browned all over, 60-90 minutes.

Add Port, Wine, Rum, Water, Sugar, & Ginger to a saucepan (or crockpot on low), and lightly simmer

Slice roasted Oranges in half and squeeze juice into the Wine/Port/Rum mixture.

Serve in a punch bowl, and ladle into individual glasses.

Ingredients:

1 bottle of Port (500ml)

1 bottle of Dry Red Wine (750ml)

.5 cup Dark Rum

1 cup Water

.5 cup Brown Sugar

.25 tsp Fresh Grated Ginger

4 Oranges

20-40 whole Cloves

This warm spiced wine punch was a favorite of Charles Dickens - Scrooge himself offers this toasty cocktail to Bob Cratchit at the end of a Christmas Carol. We added some rum because we're American and that's likely what would have been added to the holiday punch bowl in the early 19th century. Definitely not something you're likely to get at any local bar, it is an easy and delicious drink that you can batch and savor throughout the week, or impress your friends at your next holiday party.
